"Get verified on WhatsApp" can mean three different things, and mixing them up wastes weeks. Meta has business verification, which checks your company and belongs to your business portfolio. It has the Official Business Account status, shown as a blue checkmark and granted per phone number. And it sells Meta Verified, a paid subscription that gives a verified badge through a different route. They are related, but each has its own requirements.
Meta's help pages say you need to start verification when you are ready to scale your business-initiated conversations or want to request Official Business Account status. You provide your business details, including the legal business name, address, phone number and website, and they must match your legal entity exactly. Your website must load and be HTTPS compliant, and you need full control of the portfolio to start the process. Meta may ask you to upload official documents, such as a business licence or articles of incorporation.
The most common reason for delay is a mismatch: a trading name on the website, a different spelling on the licence, or an old address. Prepare one set of details and use it everywhere. If you work through a Business Messaging Partner, ask whether they can start the verification from their onboarding flow and who owns the portfolio afterwards, because you need full control of it.
| Item | Without verification | With verification |
|---|---|---|
| Message templates per messaging account | 250 | Up to 6,000, if at least one WhatsApp account has a number with an approved display name |
| Messaging limit outside the 24-hour window | Starts at 250 unique numbers | One path to 2,000 is to verify the business; see messaging limits |
| Display name review | Pending | Starts for all numbers once verification completes |
| Official Business Account request | Not possible | Possible if the other criteria are met |
In practice, verification is the single highest-value setup step for a business that plans to send campaigns, because it raises both the template cap and the path to higher sending limits.
Meta's developer documentation says Official Business Account phone numbers have a blue checkmark beside their name in the contacts view. The eligibility rules are specific.
Two exclusions are worth knowing. Meta does not grant OBA status to business employees, test accounts, or WhatsApp Business app phone numbers, so a number running on the app alone is not eligible. And without OBA status, a number does not appear in WhatsApp search results. If you meet the criteria but see no option to apply in WhatsApp Manager, Meta's page says to contact your Meta point of contact, your solution provider's support, or Meta Support.
An older Meta help page also said a business must be "notable", meaning widely covered in news publications. The current developer documentation does not list that as a criterion, so treat it as possibly outdated, but know that Meta may still decide case by case.
oba_status such as NOT_STARTED.Meta's page does not say how long a review takes, so do not promise a date to a client or a launch plan. Build a margin into any campaign that assumes the badge.
Meta says display names should be related to your business and must not violate WhatsApp commerce and business policies. After business verification completes, the display name review for all numbers on the account starts. Choose a name your customers already use for you, spelled as on your website and packaging. A generic or keyword-style name is a common reason for rejection, and a rejected name blocks OBA.
Meta Verified is a separate paid subscription that gives a verified badge in places such as the Calls tab, business profiles, context cards, chats and incoming calls. Meta's WhatsApp business site describes it as based on your activity across Meta technologies, with documents optional, and it is not the same as OBA. If a salesperson says "we will get you verified", ask which of the three they mean and what it costs.
Because Meta gives no review times on these pages, plan around the parts you control. The 30-day registration rule and the 30-day wait after a denial are fixed, so start the clock early: connect the number to the Platform as soon as you can, even if the launch is later. Run business verification and the display name review in parallel with your template work rather than after it. Keep one person responsible for the portfolio, the legal documents and the website details, so that a request from Meta for a document is answered the same day. If the blue check matters to a launch, treat it as a bonus and not a dependency, because the sending limits and template cap that verification unlocks are what the campaign actually needs.

Book a demoAccording to Meta, an unverified portfolio is limited to 250 message templates per messaging account, and a verified portfolio with an approved display name can have up to 6,000. Verification is also one path to a 2,000 messaging limit and a requirement for an Official Business Account.
Meta lists five criteria: comply with the Business Messaging Policy, be registered on the Platform for at least 30 days, have the portfolio verified, enable two-step verification on the number, and have the display name approved.
No. Meta says it does not grant Official Business Account status to business employees, test accounts, or WhatsApp Business app phone numbers.
Meta's documentation says you must wait 30 days before submitting another request. It does not state how long a review takes.
No. Meta Verified is a separate paid subscription with a verified badge. The Official Business Account is a per-number status with a blue checkmark and its own eligibility rules.
